STATIC

What began as a design exercise remixing an existing K-pop album cover (original artwork credited to aespa/SM Entertainment) evolved through several iterations into "STATIC" — a fully original fictional rock/alt-rock album concept with its own narrative arc.

Challenge

How do you visually represent an internal, emotional journey — moving from chaos, to numbness, to clarity — without relying on literal imagery, while still building a cover that feels cohesive with the album's sound and story?

Solution

Built the entire visual identity around "static" as a metaphor for emotional disconnection — the mental noise that fills the silence when a relationship goes quiet. Structured the concept around a three-act arc:

  • Interference — chaotic, distorted, harsh contrast and jagged shapes reflecting anger and confusion

  • Dead Air — muted color and negative space, the subject rendered smaller in frame to convey isolation and numbness

  • Clear Signal — color and open composition return, resolving into clarity and self-awareness

This arc shaped both the vinyl design — where the "STATIC" logo visibly cracks through the label, echoing noise breaking through — and the album cover itself, where a lone figure is shot through visual static (scan lines, noise texture, chromatic aberration), half-obscured and distant.

Impact

Demonstrates the ability to translate an abstract emotional concept into a structured visual system — not just a single image, but a narrative arc that could extend across packaging, cover art, and companion visuals. Also shows range in process: starting from an existing reference and iterating toward something fully original, rather than only working from a blank page.
